Why Microsoft Has Not Gone All Out On 3D Games

3D games is the buzzword nowadays in the gaming industry. Nintendo has its Nintendo 3DS and Sony Playstation is planning to release a number of 3D games this year. And Microsoft?

Well, industry watchers know that Microsoft is a slow adopter. They were slow to embrace the internet and so in order to win it they have to give Internet Explorer for free. They were slow to get into search, release MSN, and eventually got into Yahoo to increase their ,market shares. They were slow with the gaming consoles as well, when they realised that it can be a cash cow they created the Xbox.

With Microsoft's competitor's producing heaps of 3D games how come Microsoft is not jumping on the band wagon?

Well, part of the reason is that they are immensely enjoying the fruits of their new toy - the Microsoft Kinect which made its public debut on November 2010. And in less than four months, it has already sold 10 million units! That's quite a record even though the line up of games are not in stereoscopic 3D! Kinect has a very unique selling point and that is you can play video games without using any controller. That's because Kinect can sense you body's motion and with this you can control characters on the screen. This novelty indeeds give the Kinect quite an advantage even over the Wii.

Although Microsoft is quite slow in adopting technology, it still has its sights on 3d games. My speculation is it's letting the technology mature and letting the Kinect's novelty drive their sales in the gaming industry. In other words, 3d games would be a card that Microsoft would not play yet would be my assumption. But when the novelty of 3d gamesbecomes mainstreamon their competitors then maybe that's the time Microsoft will release of slew of 3d games made for Kinect.

And Microsoft's pacing may beright onthe money. Just lately, Nintendo released its portable game console the Nintendo 3DS. And so far, it looks like the sales will not be as good as the Kinect's.Although we are comparing apple with oranges, it still is a good indicator for Microsoft to see that investing in 3d games now may not be the right timing. You can see the comparison between Kinect and Nintendo 3DS here.

If playing Kinect now enhances the entertainment experience of gamers how much more would it be enhance if it is in 3D when the technology has matured?

Sounds like another record will be broken in the near future.
