Why Microsofts Xbox 360 Is Dominating The Living Room War

Kinect is regularly getting slammed by video game critics but it is still selling very well and it is not the hardware that lets it down unfortunately

. It is the lame games and the poor usage of the hardware many games use it for. The Kinect did have a lot of success with the release of its sesame street game, seeing Cookie respond to childrens interactions is an entertaining sight! If you dont know much about the Kinect it is a mean piece of kit, its been out a couple of years now but it is making the living room experience even more... lazy. You dont even have to pick up the remote to choose a movie anymore, Kinect bundles together a camera, a microphone and motion sensors, so with the power of voice you can control your home entertainment, almost like Bourne.

Microsoft are constantly pushing new content to the Xbox and the console has evolved into more than just a video game console, it now has a dedicated music store, a place to watch film and TV, and a social base. The continuous feeding of software and hardware updates has seen a shift in the manner the console is used. In the spring, Xbox live subscribers, for the first time ever in the US, spent more time watching video and listening to music than playing multiplayer games. Xbox is turning into an alternative to Cable services such as Sky, as on-demand movies and TV from services such as LoveFilm and Netflix are replacing the need to have cable.

Microsofts Xbox live has over 40 million members in 35 countries, they have sold 67 million units , generating $56 billion of retail and still it continues to sell consoles at a steady rate. The latest development is based around the contract subscription trials that are appearing in the states at the moment, i.e. instead of paying $199 for an Xbox bundle, you pay $99 and agree to subscribe to Xbox live gold membership for 2 years.

So Microsoft likes to use Xbox as there experimental controller and the latest development is that of smart glass. Smartglass is a tablet display that can interact and supply a second screen to your Xbox gaming and has plenty of other features. Its a straight competitor to the Nintendo Wii U tablet controller that will be released later this year.

Plenty of the Xbox success however has been down to some of its brilliant and exclusive games, the major one being Halo and of course the original Mass Effects. So there are plenty of reasons why Xbox has been the major console situated in most peoples homes and with the new Xbox 720 rumours, perhaps they will continue to reside in your living rooms!
