Why Nothing Beats Traditional Learning

If you don't have the funds or the free time to get a college degree or similar certification

, then you may have considered the option of distance, or online learning to get ahead and earn a degree. Wherever you may be in the country, may it be in a big city or in the rural areas, you can take advantage of your Internet access and take an online course while learning at your own pace.

But most of us may be best suited for the human touch of a real classroom - distance learning isn't meant for every Tom, Dick and Harry. There is no substitute for a few things offered in a traditional college setting that have helped a lot of people learn - three things to be very precise. These three features are all related to human interaction - a live professor's explanation, note-taking on a student's part, and face-to-face communication between student and teacher.

Without the human element, education is sterilized and can be an uncomfortable experience for many students, may they be of college age or working moms and dads with school-age children.

The key to success in distance learning is accepting that there are certain elements of traditional education that cannot be found in any virtual course. It can be hard for some of us to accept these things.

If you don't study your lessons or fail to turn in all the required homework assignments, that could mean a lack of motivation, thus an obstacle in the distance learning process. You cannot expect your online module to remind you about deadlines and quizzes like a real teacher would, so do your part and be more proactive. And if you're simply too busy, may it be a family or a work affair, but as long as you're too distracted to give your 100% attention to the course, you may be a grandparent (if you aren't one yet) once you finish the module.

Distance learning is best for busy people, but only to a certain extent - if you're too busy, you may not perform as well as you'd hope. The potential for a lack of focus is great - a classic example is when you are trying to study your lessons while your young children are playing noisily around the area. Or you can try juggling your busy work schedule with your studies - it may work for a while, but don't be surprised if you fail to submit a few assignments.

Online education or distance learning is well and good for some of us, let's admit it. However, make sure you can budget your time or it may not be the right choice for you yet.
