Why Nurse Jobs Turnover: The Effectiveness Of Being Treated Well
The world of healthcare seems to have a problem: high turnaround of nurses
. Why is this so, one has to ask? The reasons, though oft times complex, are really quite simple, when you think about it.
Part of the reason for this is treatment, period. Not the patients so much, because many are of the mindset that nurses are merely the helpers of doctors; but the actual attitude of the doctors can help or hurt a nurses career.
Let's say, for example, that Jane Doe, nurse works for John Doe, doctor. John is a typical Alpha Male, in the sense that he is very forthcoming and aggressive, by nature, but is gentle with his patients. He is not gentle, however, with Jane. Why is this so? Because he can be, that's why.
Normally, there is nothing to be done about personality conflicts, other than try to discuss them with the person you are conflicted with. Men, however, are not really good at communicating issues with women - it's just how they are wired.
Were Jane, for example, to go to John and confront him on his aggressive, often menacing behavior toward her, he'd probably laugh and tell her to get another job if she weren't happy that. Doctors are used to a high-turnover when it comes to nurses, see?
The only other alternative is for Jane to grow a thick skin, per se. Doing this, however, goes against the very grain of personality that creates for a good nurse: empathy as well being friendly being two high contenders for this.
But never mind growing a thick skin: does one really have to do this? The people who recruit nurses really need to look into personality matching, in addition to other aspects of what makes a nurse the perfect partner to a doctor.
Online these days, there are dating sites that look into personality matching, if not will have you take a test to see what "type" of personality you are; what "compatibility" you have with others, too. This seems to be something needing in nurse recruitment.
Even if tests are not performed, in order to best match doctors with nurses, at the very least it should be a given that both nurses and doctors are working with the right kind of personality. Since they will spend so much time together, this is really important.
The number one reason nurses list other than horrible hours for a nursing position is not being treated fairly, for one reason or another. If not the doctors, then other nurses could be responsible for this. Sometimes, new recruits will be at the mercy of more seasoned nurses, who give them a bad time at work, because they can.
Although bad behavior really should be discouraged, perhaps more disciplinary action could be taken toward those who don't treat other nurses with respect and dignity, no matter where he or she in a career. Even though that might, eventually be yet another reason for high-nursing position turnover, it wouldn't be one of the number one reasons, especially one word got out.
