Why Participate in Employee Training

One of the questions I often hear from managers and business owners is this: Is it a good idea for me to be present at the employee training

? Some of them even add, I already know this stuff, I don't need to learn it again!

Well, let me start by answering this second comment first. When you as a manager or owner participate in your people's training, your goal is not to learn some new skills. You need to observe and not participate actively. You are there to support THEIR learning.

So, should you be present at all? My answer is yes, definitely. And here's why.

At a skills training, supervisors can do a lot to make the program a success. For example, during a sales or presentation skills training, you will see what and how your people learn. You will be able to observe them in role-plays, and you will know exactly how to support and coach them after the training. At the same time, you will have a chance to catch them doing something right: I mean, to give them immediate recognition if they are good at something. Or immedate encouragement if they are struggling with something.

Some people argue that it may be too stressful or intimidating for your employees if you are there observing their training. I have even heard some trainers say this!

Well, let's see: you were probably involved in the decision to organize this training in the first place. Also, your employees are learning some work-related skills, they are not receiving confidential psychotherapy, right? And, they are being trained during their regular working hours. Well, the way I see it, you have every right to be there and observe what they are doing. It is your right as an employer, your responsibility as a supervisor, and your financial interest as a business owner, to make the most out of this event.

So, on this question, I agree with a trainer colleague of mine. He has introduced a radical rule in his trainings: if the manager does not show up, the training is cancelled. He is right. No point in training your staff if you send them the message that you don't care. So be there and observe!
