Why People Feel Loneliness And What Can Be Done About It
For many people, loneliness is a constant and unbearable condition almost akin to pain from which there is no apparent relief
. People that feel loneliness to a severe degree can very easily slip into a deep depression. In fact, many people who are depressed experience a feeling of loneliness as one of the most common symptoms.
Then there are the more temporary episodes of loneliness. These are far more common, and everyone suffers from these tinges of loneliness to some degree at some time or another. They may be brought about by the sudden departure of a close friend, a move to a strange new city, or simply a too busy schedule at home or at work that doesn't leave much time for social interaction.
The approach to the feeling of loneliness depends in large part on the degree of loneliness, the reasons behind it, and the duration of the episodes, although there is some overlap in the methods used to dispel the condition. Temporary feelings of loneliness can often be dealt with easily enough simply by picking up the phone or having a chat with a dear friend you haven't talked to in a while. In such instances, simply touching base with someone whom you have shared a significant period of your life with may be enough to lift your spirits.
A bit more challenging to deal with are feelings of loneliness that stem from having no one around to share your interests or goals. These could be the result of moving to an unfamiliar city or simply falling out with your old crowd. Although distressing, these situations can be resolved with a positive and proactive manner. You may for instance try finding a group of people in your community who share the same interests, or volunteering at your local church or socio-civic group. In situations wherein your loneliness is more the result of nothing better to do with your time than any real tragedy, you may be surprised at the measure of relief you can get by devoting some of your time and energy to others.
There are also cases of loneliness that are rooted in more serious emotional concerns, and even threats to your person. This type of loneliness is common in those that have recently lost a close family member or have been the victim of a crime. Victims of rape or spousal abuse are particularly vulnerable to feeling loneliness, and the situation definitely cannot be solved simply by chatting with an old friend or volunteering at the local soup kitchen.
If the cause of loneliness is something far more serious and has already caused a significant amount of stress, your best recourse may be to seek professional counseling. Remember that although loneliness is a common condition, there is no reason why you should have to deal with everything on your own. Things may seem pretty bleak at some point, but with a little perseverance and professional help, a lasting solution to your loneliness may be well within your reach.
