Why People Hoard And Ways You Can Learn More About It On A Couple Of Tv Channels

Compulsive hoarding is an ailment that actually also is called disposophobia which

is the excessive accumulation of possessions and the inability to get rid of any of them. This is a lot more serious than someone being a pack rat as a true hoarder will have this problem get in the way of their relationships with others, their ability to prepare meals, bathe or even sleep in their own home. Some say compulsive hoarding is a separate disorder while others contend that it is a form of obsessive compulsive disorder. Each person that is a hoarder may find value in acquiring various items and some of them once they fill up their homes will pay money to rent mini storage buildings with roll up doors to save even more things that they collect. This problem has been recently brought to a lot of people's attention through 2 telelevsion shows about this obsession.

One show that is opening up the dialogue on this more than once realized disorder is the A & E channel with a new series called Hoarders. This show usually will follow 1 or 2 hoarders in an episode to show what their living conditions are and how they are going to try to get help for this problem. Many times, it is friends or relativesfamily members that contact the show asking for help for their loved one who has a hoarding problem. It is shocking to see the way most hoarders live in rooms that are filled from floor to ceiling with possessions they have saved.

Most hoarders understand they have a problem but seem helpless to fix it. Professionals on the TV program explain that it is not just about cleaning out all of the things and making their home clean and tidy again but it is about intensive counseling for the hoarder. The majority of them have a physical reaction when the cleaning out of stuff begins and they panic at the thought of getting rid of items. Aome examples of hoarders have been a mother who had trouble dealing with being left alone once her kids left home or a person that was raised in poverty with no possessions and wants to make up for that.

Another program that is addressing this issue to the public is on The Learning Channel better known as TLC and has a show named, "Hoarding: Buried Alive". This too films the horrible living circumstances that some hoarders live in. Sometimes hoarders are even scared to get rid of garbage and so the places are full of trash and all of the bugs and animals that go along with that making it a big health hazard. Most hoarders are ashamed of their homes and never have anyone over because then their reality may be seen.

There are mental helath professionals and doctors that specialize in hoarding and that is what people living with this affliction need. A few hoarders have said that these television programs have saved their lives which are a strong statement. Hopefully, shedding light on this problem will assist more people with this illness.
