It would appear that these sites are not in use because the home pages contain little to no content. Mostly, the pages contain links that point to the main sites.
5) To give away as gifts. - some marketers recognize the value in a domain name. So they buy it, and then do nothing with it. The intention is to give it away as a gift when the name appreciates in value. Remember that registering a name costs barely $10. But if the value of the name appreciates, the gift can be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. Premium domain names can even cost five to six figures.
