Why Philadelphia's Wingbowl Will Wilter

Wingbowl is a Food Eating event unlike any other

. Where else in the world can you get together more or less 20,000 infamously inebriated fans to gather to watch a bunch of mostly fat men eat Chicken Wings. Now in it's 20 year, this extravaganza has grown from a small little event to become a world recognized affair. The story behind the inception of this event is that Al Morganti and Angelo Cataldi of the popular Phildaelphia Sports Radio Station WIP conceived of an idea in which Philadelphia Eagle Football fans could gather in an event (and keep interest in WIP) even after the NFL Eagles football team was eliminated from Superbowl contention.

From very meager beginnings it has grown into a full blown event with all the extravaganza of a Fair. Thousands of Fans, Floats, Entourage's, and Wingettes all cheer on the field of Wing Eaters. And Big awards are at stake. The victor picks up a new Automobile in addition to other prizes and media chance. The event is covered internationally in the news media. Seems as if things could not be rosier for the future of this event.

I think that this year will begin the downward spiral of Wingbowl. This will not be an immediate decimation of the event, but I truly believe that the interest and achievements of the event will wilter in the future. Let's take a look at some reasons why.

Make without doubt that Wingbowl is an event that is created for the typical Eagle's Football fan. Known as a ruffian and raucous gang, Wingbowl provides one last chance for Eagle's fans to raise the roof before the end of the season. What must be recognized however, is that most of the meteoric rise of Wingbowl duplicates an unprecedented period of success and rise of importance of the Eagles Franchise. Dating back to the hiring of Andy Reid and the selection of Donovan McNabb as quarterback the Eagles fan base has developed in numbers and dedication. During almost all these years The Eagles have been in the playoffs and this means their season has run to end only a week or 2 before the Wingbowl event.

This year is different. Eagle fans have already signed out from a dismal season. The Wingbowl tie to football for the rest of this year is weak. Even though the Wingbowl event itself will be taken for a success, this year expect the aura to be off just a bit from beyond years.

At the culmination of the Eagles season, one of 2 things may occur. Andy Reid will be fired or he will not. Either way the prospects for fan interests next year will be touched on. If Andy stays, fans will be turned of from the start. If he is cut, then expect the Eagles to go through a period of rebuilding with a few losing years. Either way, Eagles success and fan interest go hand-in-hand with Wingbowl success and the next couple or years look to be rough.

Next year, to compensate for waning fan interest, WIP will be made to market and advertise more to achieve the same level of Wingbowl achievement. One way or another this means spending more income. This may be bearable for one year, but I doubt that WIP will subsidize the event many years into the future unless the event shows chances to continue growth.

Think about it for a minute from WIP's point of view. They had a real winner. But, every good idea has it's time. Nothing lasts forever. This year will be a climax that will be hard to reproduce without spending more money in the future. And nobody will want to fund an event just to get back to a previous standard. I may be wrong, I wish Happy 20th Birthday to Wingbowl. I just do n't expect it will make it to be much older than 25.
