Why Quirky Jewellery Is Considered A Greater Gift Than The Old Reliable

There is a common misconception that quirky jewellery has to be extremely strange in design

, but this is not the case. After all, the word quirky does not actually refer to anything too different, but instead things that are unexpected in their nature or features, or have peculiar traits. Anything more than that would probably be considered downright weird. Quirky suggests a charm that weird tends not to, and for this reason, jewellery that is placed in the quirky category can be highly sought after. This is normally because they look so distinctive, a quality that any wearer holds on high. Jewellery is highly subjective in any circumstance, which is why people have their favourite designers. It certainly explains the popularity of Nukuku, Antoni Gaudi and Rennie Mackintosh jewellery designs. Of course, this quirkiness is not exclusive to pendants, rings, bangles and earrings, and other glittery items we wear. It can relate to practically every kind of gift, from tablecloths to table lamps and distinctive style of carved mirror to items of furniture. But there are different options. Jewellery design is always expressive, which is why it can seem that there is no end to the array available. And when a celebrated artist or designer turns their ideas into jewellery the results can be spectacular. Perfect examples are the pieces created by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who was an inspirational art nouveau architect in the early part of the last century. His designs have been turned into very distinctive pieces that are much vaunted by lovers of jewellery. Two particularly impressive pieces are the Mackintosh moonstone pendant and the Mackintosh rhodolite garnet bangle. The pendant comprises a rectangular structure of just under 5cms, with three teardrop shapes at the end that are set with moonstones. The rectangle is panelled, in a way that seems to mimic a stain glass window, with selected panels gold plated. A silver chain allows the piece to hang elegantly from around the neck. The bangle, meanwhile, is made of silver and features four leaves, each of which is gold plated. While three are grouped together on the silver band, a fourth protrudes at the top side, while a deep red coloured rhodolite garnet protrudes opposite it. The splash of colour stands out and adds great character to a piece of jewellery that is very eye catching. While neither of these items are particularly quirky, they are nonetheless distinctive, which is perhaps the true source of their attractiveness. Other types of gifts that are not strange but which have an impressive twist that places them out of the ordinary are the carved wood framed mirrors that are also available. These may not sound particularly special, but it is the manner in which they were carved, and the choice of wood used, that is the point. For example, the Darpna carved wood mirror boasts highly elaborated carving in the frame, with a network of curved leaves, branches and thorns emblazoned on an ivory white frame of mango wood. The effect is a mirror that is filled with character, a stylish version that can fit into a culturally themed bathroom, bed room and even living room. This genuine workmanship follows a traditional Indian design, and is created by hand by artisans in northern India. If the classic look is preferred then a Jasailmer mirror is ideal. Its frame is typical of a classically designed photo frame, and but for the mirror inside would easily be mistaken for one. The impressive white wash finish of the wood makes the frame look haggard and worn, adding years to what is a new mirror, but also providing it with a raw, urban feel that makes it an ideal complement for contemporary designs. This mirror can come with its own table stand, making it possible to set up anywhere. Many people love to receive something different, something stylish and unique as a gift, because of the knowledge that the sender thought outside the box rather than from within safe parameters. It is partly the reason that rennie mackintosh jewellery has its army of committed fans, and why an intricately carved mirror frame can be adored by the receiver despite the wide variety of mirror frames available. Most of all, for any lover of shiny accessories, the opportunity to wear something that is different and interesting, is a welcome chance to display individuality. There can be little surprise then that quirky jewellery has long had, and will continue to have, a leading role as a gift for any occasion.
