Certain patients have preferences regarding this. A patient with a serious condition should be first made to undergo the process of detoxification by which the body of the patient is made free from the substance. Detoxification is indeed painful and can be done through various methods, one of the most common being methadone treatment. If the state of the patient is not so serious and does not require detoxification, physicians may directly apply the counseling part on him which is an integral part of every therapy that is given to drug addicts. The main reason behind this counseling is to ensure that the patient does not go into a relapse. Counseling makes the patient realize that the drug-free life is the one that should be led, motivating him not to go back to that life.

The main problem that families of drug addicts face is that the patients themselves are unwilling to go for treatment. It is at this moment that family members need to show constant affection towards them instead of being harsh on them, so that they are willing to undergo drug treatment and rehabilitation.
