Why Security Guard Training? Why Not?
My nephew lives in Los Angeles
My nephew lives in Los Angeles. He hates school, but somehow managed to get his high school diploma by the skin of his teeth. He enjoys sports and being physical, and hates sitting at a desk with every fiber of his being. He currently lives at home with his single mother and wants to stay there and turn the garage into an apartment and rent it from her to help her out financially. The question is, where to work? What to do? He actually has a job right now at a sandwich shop, but he can only get part time hours, and wants something more. My suggestion to him was to look into being a security guard. After the initial guffawing at the thought of becoming like Paul Blart, the mall cop, he thought about it and decided maybe it was worth looking into. So, here are some pros and cons I researched for him about the security guard biz.
Cons
1.The salary, to begin with, is fairly low-paying. The starting salary for security guards in California is just over $20,000, and the median is just over $30,000. It really depends on who you work for, how fast your salary will increase.
2.It is, by nature, a somewhat unsafe and risky job. Not like police officers, mind you, but, depending on what type of establishment you are guarding, the risks could be fairly high. Although, the higher the risk, the higher the salary.
3.Lots of paperwork. Cops joke about paperwork, but, security guards get in on the fun of writing reports, too. Everything has to be documented for safety.
Pros
1.Even though the salary starts out rather low, it can lead to higher paying positions, especially if you go through Guard Training in Los Angeles, or whatever city you happen to live in, and get your firearms card to become an Armed Guard. You can also do some other certifications and guard training to receive higher paying positions.
2.It's usually pretty easy to find a job. Once you have decided that this is what you want to do, you can do some simple security guard training in Los Angeles or online, and get hired fairly quickly, since there are a plethora of security guard positions out there.
3.It can be quite a fulfilling job when you think about how you are helping protect the community in which you live. A lot more fulfilling than making sandwiches for ornery customers for 15 - 20 hours a week.
After thinking over these pros and cons, and realizing that most security guards are not, in fact, at all like Paul Blart, mall cop, my nephew decided to go for it. I just hope that my sister-in-law doesn't come after me with a shotgun if he ever gets injured on the job.
