Why Should You Choose Medical Transcription As A Career?
When looking at career choices, there's a lot to think about
. But if you want to work at home, medical transcription may be the perfect choice for you.
1. Medical transcription pay.
As of this writing, the median medical transcriptionist pay is $15.41 per hour. Top transcriptionists can earn over $20 per hour.
Your pay often depends on you, as at home transcriptionist positions tend to pay on production. The great part about that is that as your skills improve, so do your earnings, whether or not you also get an increase in your pay rate.
2. A growing profession.
Medical transcription is expected to grow by 11% between 2008-2018, which is about average. The skill has good demand, and the demand is expected to stick around for a number of years to come.
3. The ability to work at home.
Medical transcription has been a work at home opportunity for many years, but how you go about it has gotten easier over time. My older sister started out having to pick up tapes and return finished reports in person. Now most dictation is received over secure internet connections, and reports are returned the same way.
The hours you work are also quite flexible. If you prefer to work early in the mornings, you can find a position that will let you do that. If you prefer to work in the evenings or late at night, you can do that. You can even be traditional and work 8-5 if that's how you want to go about it. It's up to you and the hours you can best work.
4. You can move and keep your job.
One of the best things about many work at home positions is that your employer will not care where you live, so long as you have a high speed internet connection. If your spouse gets a job that requires the family to move, you won't have to find a new job for yourself. Just take time off as needed to manage the move itself.
5. Time for your family.
By working early mornings or late evenings and nights, you can have quite a bit of time for your family while earning a living. No more calling the boss because your child got sick at school. You can just handle the situation as needed.
Medical transcription isn't right for everyone. You need excellent spelling and grammar schools, as well as the ability to type quickly. But if it suits you, the flexibility and lifestyle are wonderful.
