Why Stories and Music can Help You Speak French

One of the surest ways to fail at learning something new is to try too hard

. When you reduce a field of study to a series of facts to be learned, it saps it of all joy and robs you of anything but an academic sense of accomplishment, at most. This is not how to learn the French language. The French are famous for putting a great deal of importance on how something is experienced. Food shouldn't be eaten quickly, work should be personally, as well as financially, rewarding and music and art should be savored. The same is true of their language.

A lot of people want to know how to learn French quickly without ever thinking of what that means. Likely, they envision themselves being able to speak the language fluently and, therefore, having accomplished their goal. Learning a new language, however, is much more than a goal that you work toward. It means learning a new way to see, describe and experience the world. Songs and stories are two of the best ways to experience the world through the eyes of another, which is why they're found in every culture on the planet.

There are no people who are unfamiliar with the power of music and stories to convey information. Oral cultures don't even bother with the written word and some of them, such as the Native Americans, have vast and detailed stores of knowledge that are preserved in this way. This is because stories get the listener involved with the protagonist and, in many ways, the listener experiences the events of the story as if they happened to the listener directly. This is an effective way to learn the French language.

As you hear people speak French in everyday situations, you'll find that you simply pick up words by hearing them repeated over and over again. The result is the same as hearing the word repeated alone over and over, but the experience is enjoyable, productive and generally more effective in helping you to recall words. Stories also open up your imagination and the creative parts of your brain, which allows you to assimilate words without analyzing them or trying to say them yourself before you're ready. The fact that the story is going on makes it very easy to be patient and to just enjoy listening as you learn.
