Why The American Youth Is Searching For A Google Fortune

The American Dream, by definition, is the great "rags to riches" story

. To be able to go from "nothing" to "something," from poor to rich, from low class to upper crust. America is a capitalist nation and we don't enforce any sort of an economic class hierarchy on anyone. People from all over the world have moved to the United States because they believe if you work hard enough, you will move up in the world.

That is the American Dream by definition. The American Dream as understood in modern terms is very different, however. If you were to ask the youth of today's America what the American Dream is, you would get a very different answer. "To get rich." Period. And the silent but implied subtext is: "At any cost."

Today's youth sees wealth in the pages of US Weekly and on MTV's "Cribs." They don't see the accumulation of wealth as being something done by store owners, shipbuilders, or carpenters. They don't even see it as being a result of high levels of education - doctors, lawyers, business executives. They understand that wealth comes from talent - like musicians or sports stars - or from being physically more attractive than most people - actors and models. Hard work, as far as they can see, simply isn't a necessary factor.

But most young adults understand that the group of people rich from talent and physical appearances won't include them, unfortunately. So they go another direction. Millions of people head to the Internet every day to find their Google fortune. Some of these people decide the way to money and luxury will be from starting their own work at home business.

Late night infomercials, radio advertisements, online links - they all point the way to people claiming that some Google start up kit gave them the tools to get the big bucks. These people believe these stories and testimonies - "I made $30,000 my first month!" - because they live in a world where people seem to have money effortlessly. So they purchase their own Google start up kit and wait for the money to role in.

Others decide that the real Google fortune isn't in buying a Google start up kit - it's in selling a Google start up kit. That's why we average citizens can't go on the Internet at all these days without being inundated by advertisements claiming to have the key to career independence and riches. There are hundreds of different options, each one "perfectly suited" for someone.

But maybe the problem isn't people shilling a "Google fortune." Maybe the problem isn't even the people buying the Google start up kits. Maybe the problem is that all of us are so willing to indulge today's obsession with being rich for the sake of being rich - Paris Hilton, anyone? - that we've taken the hard work out of the American Dream. And as a result, what used to be a country of dreams, is starting to be a country of sales pitches.
