Why The Right Shed Foundation Is So Important

A solid shed foundation isn't exactly the first thing people think of when they're thinking about purchasing a shed

. As it turns out though, this happens to be the most important part. If you don't start with a decent foundation, you're setting yourself up for troubles down the road. If done right, you'll never need to mess with it again.

So let's discuss the options:

-Wood-based shed foundation

-Concrete pier foundation

-Concrete slab foundation

Shed Foundation: Wood-based

Surprisingly one of the best choices is a wooden foundation. It is certainly the quickest and least expensive, and if you get pressure treated beams, you can avoid a lot of problems with rot, and other issues commonly associated with using wood as a foundation. The key to eliminating rot is that the timber needs room to breathe so that it can dry out if it gets wet. Wood is also very handy if you ever decide to move your shed. Even though it can be a heck of a lot more simple to move around than other foundations you do still need pretty level ground first.

Pier Shed Foundation

When your ground isn't quite as level as you'd like it to be, concrete piers are the way to go. Piers are ideal for evening out the uneven surfaces. Also the concrete is much less susceptible (compared to wood) to rot. Over time, it will last quite a bit longer. It isn't quite as portable as a wood foundation either, although, it's a lot better than at least one other type of foundation.

Concrete Shed Foundation

A concrete slab is the best choice if you don't ever anticipate needing to relocate the shed in the future. That foundation is staying put basically forever, so once it's installed, don't expect to ever move it. You can't really go wrong with a concrete foundation under these circumstances. As long as you get it smoothed out and level you'll be in good shape. Make sure you get more step-by-step information to get an idea of what all is involved. Ideally you want a smooth surface for your shed to lay on. That's the ultimate goal and if your foundation done properly, you'll be well on your way.
