Why Use Sharepoint

Microsoft SharePoint platform was first released in 2001 but has been creating a buzz in the IT industry since its existence

. SharePoint 2007 was released in late2006. It is currently in its fourth version called SharePoint 2010 also called as MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server).

So what can SharePoint do?

I have been asked this question quite a few times by my prospective clients. My answer was always depended on how much customization they would prefer and how far they wanted to go with it. I have listed below the number of ways how SharePoint can be used so you can think in a structured way how to leverage this platform.

SharePoint helps in bring users closer to share data, information across your company. Its usability is great and provides personalized experience and all of it on a single infrastructure which actually saves time and money for any organization that chooses to use SharePoint.

2. People and Personalization: SharePoint helps people work together effectively. SharePoint provides a platform that is comprehensive and flexible that allows people to work more closely and together. The flexibility for users to use the platform in their preferred way proves to be very effective for the organization. It allows for your employees to make groups, share information and ideas, connect with each other and find information very naturally.

3. Enterprise Search: Search can help employees find the content and information; they need by using the combination of an integrated, easy-to-manage platform with one of the best enterprise search technology available today.

4. Enterprise Content Management: SharePoint is also now, more than ever being used a content management system. It allows you to manage content from its creation till its no longer needed and taken off the system. User role based access can be given to your employees to participate in the content management lifecycle.

5. Business Intelligence: SharePoint has tools available to create reports and dashboards. You can plan, report, monitor and analyze your teams or organizations performance. It allows you to create scorecards that can display important metric and Key performance indicators. From what I understand about SharePoint, it has a lot to offer anybody and everybody out there. Though the platform does not concentrate on a core capability, it scores pretty well on all round performance.
