The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not determined the effect of ultrasounds
on the mother and fetus; therefore suggests that pregnant mothers only obtain an ultrasound when prescribed by the physician attending their pregnancies. Many private companies have begun to emerge that charge a fee for keepsake' baby photos using 3D or 4D ultrasound techniques. Since definitive evidence regarding the safety of these procedures does not exist, mothers are urged not to patronize these companies.
