Although spending time lazing on one of the many beaches that makes up the Costa del Sol is ideal in the summer. If you would like to get away from the madding crowds then why not consider visiting one of this country's more traditional White villages that are to be found inland.
One such village that is worth considering visiting and situated around an hour's drive from the main Costa del Sol town of Marbella is Antequera. This not only provides some of the regions architectural but also historical showpieces.
So what things are there in this town that you may find extremely interesting? Below we take a look at a number of them.
1. Arco de los Gigantes This is a very imposing triumphal arch and has been standing since 1585 after Felipe II (then King of Spain) asked for it to be erected. This is known as the country's smallest as well as being its oldest open air museum.
2. La Pena de los Enamorados (Lover's Rock) It is more commonly referred to by the locals as Franco's Nose due to it being shaped like the head of a giant who is asleep. This is a large natural rock formation that is situated between Antequera and the neighbouring town of Archidona.
3. Dolment de Viera & Dolmen de Menga These are roughly around 4,500 years old and are believed to be the tomb of where an important nobleman of the town was interred.
4. Municipal Museum (Museo Municipal) This is to be found in the town and is housed in a house that used to be the private residence of the Najera family. The interior courtyard of this building is now used to display a large collection of artefacts relating to the Romans who occupied this area many centuries ago.
