It is amazing to think what sports fans suffered through just a few short decades ago

. Watching their favorite game from home be it football, hockey, baseball, or tennis required 20/20 vision and a deep sense of commitment. Televisions were tiny, had terrible reception, and games were broadcast in black and white. Viewing even championship games like this was not exactly conducive to a party atmosphere. What's more, most games were only covered by one, maybe two camera angles, which could make it difficult to get a sense of what was happening down on the field.

Oh, how much has changed in such a short time! Not only can you watch your favorite games in color (shocking!) and on larger screens, but multiple camera angles and the ability of broadcasters to help explain plays on the screen makes the matches easier to watch for those who are not experts on the games themselves. This has helped expand the audience for many popular pastimes like football and basketball.

But perhaps the greatest innovation in recent game-watching history was the introduction of high definition televisions to homes across the United States! These amazingly clear screens allow people to watch games like never before, with crystal clear definition. Instead of a fuzzy image, which made it almost impossible to see the ball or puck in certain sports (like tennis, for example), having a high definition screen allows you the home viewer to keep your eye on the ball like never before. This is especially helpful for those who have just come to start watching a sport. It's hard to enjoy your first game of hockey if you cannot tell what side of the ice rink the tiny black puck is on! Even though some broadcasts will edit the image to highlight the black puck in red or another brilliant color, true hockey fans saw this as sacrilege, and it really is just better to be able to see the darn puck in the first place!

Having a high definition television screen also allows you to better understand certain calls by referees or umpires on the field, because you can actually see what happened! The broadcasters will still probably have to show you the replay, and repeat it over and over again in slow motion, but you will eventually be able to see whether the call was fair. You will be able to tell whether or not the running back's knees were down or not when he caught the ball, because the incredibly subtle and precise image will allow you to see whether or not there is a bit of air between his knees and the grass. You will be able to see whether or not that tennis ball landed on the out-of-bounds line, or just outside of it, to know whether or not the serve was good.

And finally, having a high definition television will allow you to see the player's faces better. This can help you to remember the player's better, and soon you will become an expert on the game itself!
