Why Would You Need To Replace Antenna Cables?

Antenna Cable, RF cable or coaxial cable as it is also called

, carries radio frequency energy between the antennas and the radio equipment. Almost every reception problem is caused by one of two things; a bad ground on the antenna, or a bad antenna cable running from the antenna. If there is a problem with your existing antenna cables; maybe they are old and worn, or damaged, poor quality cables, too long and sagging or just don't deliver a very good reception, you may consider changing your antenna cables.

For some devices, to replace the antenna cable means buying a new length of cable with the correct connectors on either end and replacing one like for like length of cable onto the device. Be sure to get the minimum length of cable possible for the job. The longer the antenna cable, the higher the signal loss. This decreases range and performance. For best performance, use a short cable between the antenna and the wireless device.

For devices which have their antenna RF cables routed though something, through a false ceiling, through a boat or a dashboard perhaps replacing the cable is a little trickier, but here's a top tip. Before you remove the old cable, plug the cable into the antenna and then tape or tie with string the end of the new cable to the antenna plug of the old cable. You can then pull the old coaxial cable out at the point where it plugs into the receiver, pulling the new antenna cable through the same route.

There are also times when you replace coaxial cable that has been fixed into place. Again you can follow the old route, but sometimes a new shorter route might just be what's needed to improve the signal performance. A few words of warning; do not cut the antenna cable. When routing the antenna cable, be careful not to pinch, squash, kink, or crimp the cable, or cut, damage, or puncture the external jacket of the antenna cable because this will degrade the signal even though you positioned the antenna correctly. Imagine the cable, as a water hose, any kinks and you would be preventing the water from continuing through. Install conduit for the antenna cable, to help prevent damage from ware and tare.
