So you think you want an external hardrive? Want to be able to backup your documents and pictures quickly and easily?

. Well creating a backup to an external hardrive is super simple and so much faster than other backup system I've ever tried. I know a lot of people use various types of backup devices but a portable external hard drive is by far the fastest and largest backup medium you can get for the money. You will definitely want to back up all of your itunes music files, pictures, family movies, bookmarks, outlook contacts...I mean you can most definitely create a backup of almost anything you've got on your computer.

It is really nice to have the ability to disconnect your external hardrive from the computer you are backing up and move it to an offsite location. This allows you to protect your valuable data and the amazing portability of these devices means you can plug them into almost any computer and have access to your information. Some places you could store your external hard drive might be a relative's house, a friend's office or a fireproof safe at your home or office. If you leave the external hardrive right next to your computer and your home or office is destroyed, you didn't do yourself much good by backing up your data did you? And for many people this is what happens. They realize too late just how critical that data is to them after it's been destroyed.

The large data storage volume on the market today is available with external hard drives. What's more, is that the devices are rarely discarded for hardware failure. In fact, they are quite reliable over long stretches of time before needing a replacement. At some point, you'll want to replace them because you don't want to risk losing your data. Most of the time people are buying a new drive long because technology has improved and there's now one that's faster and has a larger capacity. These things are so reliable and so inexpensive it just makes sense to use them. You won't find any other type of backup to be easier, faster or at a better price.

You need to utilize some kind of software to automate backup jobs on your computer so that you don't forget things as you would if you dragged and dropped files manually every time. I believe that every windows operating system since and including windows XP has a built in backup module that you can use. It may not be the best solution for creating your backup jobs but it will work and it's free. Please set up reminders for yourself to create your backups on a routine basis. When your done with a backup, take your external hardrive offsite and store is safely.

If you have more than one computer, use a different portable external hardrive for each one as it will make your life easier...trust me. I have a drive for all three of my computers with labels on each to identify which computer belongs to which, that way I don't have to remember. Is that clear? Hope so.

You really can't go wrong with an external hard drive. The one I use is one of the portable external hard drives from Toshiba. But there are a lot of people who need more capacity than a portable device can offer. If you're one of those folks, you should really look at the Western Digital 2 TB External Desktop Hard Drive, it is highly recommended all over the web. Most of the smaller portable external hardrives will only a require a usb cable for operation but the larger capacity desktop models will need usb and a wall plug(AC adapter)included by the manufacturer.
