Why You Need to Blog
Of all the social media activities, blogging is the one people shy away from the most
. Blogging usually takes more time and effort, and most businesses don't consider it to be a productive activity. After all, they reason, in this age of 140 word tweets and shortening attention spans, who has the time and inclination to read a blog post, much less write one. Moreover, it's disheartening to write a blog and then see it languish without any comments or audience interaction. However, that kind of thinking is just plain wrong. Let us give you a few very good reasons as to why blogging should continue to be an essential part of your social media campaign.
It lets you speak out: Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms are great for conveying short bits of information, but if you want to speak out and talk about issues that affect you, the blog is still the best way to do it. It gives your company a unique personality, a voice so to speak, that your customers can relate to and come when they want to hear your side of the story.
Blogging allows you to create your own content: On other social media platforms, you will mostly find yourself posting links or snippets. However, when it comes to your blog, you are not restricted. You get to create your own compelling, original content. And at the end of the day, that is what is going to get you the attention you need.
Your blog is your own: Remember Orkut? Or Friendster? For every successful social media platforms, there are a hundred others that fall by the wayside. And yet they all seem so promising when they are shiny and new. And then there are those that achieve popularity and then, just as you start focusing on it, begin their slide into obscurity (MySpace, anyone?). At the end of the day, these are platforms and your success depends on the success of these platforms. With your blog though, the story is different. Your blog is your own. Its success depends on your efforts. And it will always be around.
So you see, not only do you need to blog, if done well it can be the cornerstone of your social media marketing campaign. Don't hide it behind an obscure URL; instead link it to the front page. If possible, share the latest posts on the front page too. Your customers will love you for it.
