Why You Should Get Eye Exams

Most of us agree that our eyesight is one of our most valuable senses

. Still most of us only get eye exams when we are in school or even for our driver's license. That is pretty crazy. Many of us will lose at least some of our vision throughout our lives. The best way to measure how our sight measures up is by getting eye exams every one to three years. We all know that minor loss will be compensated for and that we may not notice it. So what is the eye doctor checking for?

Well at your family physician they are checking to see that you can see. They are not going to be able to detect some of the more common issues. For instance, nearsightedness means that a patient can see things that are near, but things that are far are blurry. Farsightedness is just the opposite. The patient will see things clearly that are far away, but will find things close by fuzzy. Astigmatism is the most symptomatic of the three common problems. Astigmatism may cause headaches, fatigue and eyestrain. Astigmatism causes blurry vision for a patient. After eye exams are complete, the patient will be given an idea of the types of things that can help them see better.

Recommended treatment may include vitamins. In some cases you may need contacts or eyeglasses. Many patients find relief in being able to see again. Some of course are hung up on the idea of glasses. There are benefits and drawbacks to both styles. In the end you will likely opt to own both. Contacts can have a bit of a learning curve. Both options need to be cleaned properly. Some patients complain of snow, rain and foggy glasses. Others feel it is a small price to pay to see. You will want to discuss any questions and how to care for your glasses and contacts with your doctor. They will discuss when you need to wear them. Some patients need to wear glasses to drive or read while others need to wear them all the time.

Many patients find that after they can see again the treatment is not a big deal. You will be able to read your favorite books, watch television, see your kids playing on the jungle gym, and even drive safely. Ensuring that you can see and get your family home safely is probably the biggest benefit to eye exams. You don't even have to give up style. Frames are stylish and modern and prescription sunglasses are available. Whatever you choose the ability to see properly has always been in style.
