2011 marks the eleventh year for the Kentucky Derby Future Wager program which provides fans and handicappers the opportunity to wager on potential Derby runners. It also can provide higher payouts than are realized on Derby day!
The wager format is for Win and Exacta wagers only.
If your wagered on horse does not make it into the starting Kentucky Derby field, your wager is lost as no refunds are made.
There are 3 Future Wager Pools scheduled weeks apart during the Derby Prep-race schedule. Each Pool will have 25 wagering interests consisting of 24 selected possible Kentucky Derby runners with the 25th being the Field (all other horses).
The possibility of getting a higher payout in the Future Pool is great! Of the three Future Wager Pools, Pool 3 seems to give back the highest payoffs.
Last year Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver paid $18.00 on Derby day but paid $$43.20, $51.20, and $73.00 in Pools 1,2 and 3 respectively. The Super Saver / Ice Box Exacta paid $152.40 on Derby day but paid $176.40, $259.20 and $1,077.40 in Pools 1,2 and 3!
Even when the post time favorite wins the Kentucky Derby their payoffs are still higher in the Future Pools.
When Big Brown won in 2008 he paid $6.80 on Derby day but paid $8.60, $15.00 and $8.60 in the Future Pools. In Pools 1 and 2 he was a part of the Field entry and was not listed as an individual betting entry until Pool 3. (the Field wagering entry is always the favorite in Pools 1 and 2).
In the 12 years of the Derby Future Wager Pools, the Kentucky Derby favorite has won 4 times and all 4 times their Future Wagers paid higher!
There have only been 3 times when the Future Wager did not pay more than on Derby day.
They were when a long-shot won the Kentucky Derby!
In 2009 Mine That Bird (50-1) won and paid $103.20. His Pool 1,2 and 3 payoffs were $5.80, $11.80 and $36.80. That is because he was never a single wagering interest in the Future Pools and was include as part of the Field.
In 2005 Giacomo (50-1) paid $102.60 on Derby day and his Future Wager payouts were $52.00, $54.20 and $103.60!
The 3rd time was in 1999, the first year of the Future Wager, when Charismatic won and paid $64.00 with his Pool 1,2 and 3 payouts being $10.20, $30.20 and $26.60 respectively. Charismatic also was never a single betting entry in the pools and thus a part of the Field.
In conclusion if you feel a long-shot will win the Kentucky Derby do not wager on the horse in the Future Wager. However, if you think that one of the three hyped runners during the Derby Prep-race season will win, then bet on the horse in all 3 of the Pools.
