Why You Should Wear Sunglasses Year Round
A pair of sunglasses is considered the most essential accessory when you are out in the sun during the summer season
. We all wear sunglasses in summers in order to protect our eyes from ultra violet rays and the skin surrounding the eyes from turning dry and patchy. However, a lot of people are still unaware of the fact that our eyes actually need protection from the sun rays year round.
Thought the sun is not as scorching during other seasons as in summer, UV rays are constantly active and can be dangerous even during cooler season. This means that the best recourse for you to keep your eyes and skin protected year round is to wear sunglasses.
UV Rays
Most people are aware of the fact that there are both UV-A and UV-B ultra violet rays that are dangerous for our skin. Usually, it is portrayed that UV rays are harmful only for the eyes; however, the fact is that it causes equal damage to both eyes and the skin since it soaks up the natural moisture of the skin leaving it dry, patchy and scaly.
Retinal Damage
Sun rays can have several kinds of damages on your eyes. Constant exposure to sunlight can result in cataracts, photokeratitis, also known as flash burns, or snow blindness, sun burns of cornea that blurs vision and two distinct variations of growth of the eye.
Benefits of Wearing Sunglasses
When it comes to sunglasses, dont fall for low prices. Always look for companies that provide information about labeling and standards regarding UV protection. The best pair of sunglasses will offer you UV-400 protection which can block out harmful UV rays up to 100%. According to studies, wearing sunglasses without UV protection can be more harmful than wearing no sunglasses at all. It is so because the darker lens compels the pupil to expand which allows dangerous UV rays to make way into your eyes more than what squinting would allow.
The color of your lens does not matter much unless you wish to block the high Energy Visible (HEV) rays as well. The HEV rays are known to cause macular degeneration. In order to block the HEV rays, you should select reddish brown, copper, or bronze lens.
Sunglasses should ward off at least 75% to 90% of the visible light in order to offer best protection. This means when you look into the mirror wearing glasses, you should not be able to see your eyes reflecting through the lens.
