Why Your Balanced Diet Isn't Enough Today
So you're generally a pretty healthy person
So you're generally a pretty healthy person. You eat breakfast everyday. You watch your fat and calorie intake. Most of your meats are lean. You try to stay away from simple carbs like white bread and sugar. You work whole wheat in as much as possible and you try to get enough fruit and veggies each day. Congratulations, your diet is healthier than most. Yet you're just not seeing the results you want. You may not be gaining weight but you're certainly not losing it either. What has gone wrong?
If this describes your style of eating then you are a balanced eater. While we all have room for improvement, your diet is pretty good already. The human body utilizes three main sources of energy: carbohydrates, fat, and protein. You need all three of these in specific proportions for your body to function properly. The body was designed to seek out a state of equilibrium known as homeostasis. This is the state of being when all things are in balance. The body is comfortable and functions well in homeostasis. But if weight loss is your goal, then you need to shake things up a bit.
Articles and articles have been written on the importance of exercise but nutrition and diet play an equally important role. Carbohydrates serve as the body's first and primary source of fuel. The average person has about three days worth of carbohydrate energy stored in his or her body at any given time. As long as you are in a state of homeostasis, your body will continue to rely on your steady carb supply to meet its metabolic needs. Only by disrupting this metabolic pathway can you tap into your fat stores and watch the fat melt away.
The problem with most diets is that simply cutting back on calories can send your body into starvation mode. This causes the body to cling even harder to its fat reserves since it doesn't know when the next meal is coming. When the body does not get enough protein, the first thing to go is your hard-earned lean muscle.
The best way to lose fat is to kick your metabolism into fat-burning mode. This is done by temporarily depleting your body of its carbohydrate reserves. To do this you must cut out basically all carbohydrates, sugar, and fat coming from sources other than a select group of vegetables and lean proteins. This in turn will allow your pancreas to rest from insulin production. The average pancreas is completely overtaxed by constantly producing enough insulin to meet the intake of so many carbs and sugars. Your body will then go into a desirable state of ketosis which means that ketonic bodies are being produced and causing your body to use its own fat as fuel. This is when the fat melts off.
Due to the strict dietary limitations, it is also a good idea that you supplement your diet during this stage with highly absorbable vitamins, minerals, and enzymes and drink plenty of water.
