Pure water is the way to go. You already know that you need to drink six to eight glasses of water a day to stay healthy but water can be used for more than simple refreshment. When you have a headache, try drinking some water instead of heading for the aspirin or Advil bottle. A lot of people get headaches because they are not properly hydrated. Drinking water can help your headache dissipate in just a few minutes. Drinking your water is not the only way that you can get water to help you. Sitting in a hot bath can help relieve some of the symptoms of a cold or flu and is great for helping someone to break a fever. The heat of the water in a hot bath will make you start sweating, which is what will help break your fever (and it will relax your muscles as well). Your body uses sweat to keep its temperature even and to bring down fevers when they happen.
Garlic is a great and healthy addition to your diet. When you really want to garlic to work for you, it's best to make sure that you get at least 1500mgs of the spice a day. You can either eat a clove of garlic or take a 500 mg supplement-nutritionally they're about the same. If you eat three meals per day, each meal should have at least a clove of garlic in it or you can take a supplemental tablet. You don't have to spend a bunch of money to keep garlic on hand-it doesn't cost a lot of money (natural garlic is cheaper than the supplemental tablets). Taking in the extra garlic is great but don't keep the regiment up longer than five days. Your doctor should be called if you spend more than five days feeling very sick.
Use steam! Hot baths and showers can be even more helpful than over the counter sinus drugs. Steam opens up your sinuses and allows you to breathe and clear out buildup. To get better you need to get lots of rest and the heat from the water will relax your muscles which will make it easier to rest. You can also get the helpful steam from large containers of steaming water-just lean over the opening of the container with a towel over your head. You place a towel over your head because the sides of the towel will help direct the steam toward your face instead of simply out into the air (it also helps the water retain its heat). Steam, however you get it, relaxes your sinuses, makes it easier for you to breathe and makes blowing your nose more productive. Natural health remedies are great methods of fighting the flu and the common cold. Are you sure you want to toss back over the counter medication when there are healthier and simpler remedies available? Rather than reaching for pills, reach for teas, hot water and herbs. Most importantly, to give your natural healing methods time to work, you need to get lots of rest!
