Why Your Old Stuff Can Be Useful

Your family is probably a lot like mine

Your family is probably a lot like mine. We don't claim to be environmentalists or activists, but we know the importance of preserving as many natural resources as we can. For that reason we don't toss much stuff into the trash. Plastic, glass and paper all go in the recycling bin in our kitchen and food scraps go into the city compost bin. When trash day comes every Friday, those items are hauled away and we think very little about where they go or what becomes of them. We know that they are reused somehow, but do we know all about recycling? What more should we consider?

Most scientists and recycling experts agree that when it comes to paper and glass, reusing and recycling are perfectly safe and are crucial to our planet if we hope to have enough resources as our human population continues to grow at such an astounding rate. Going forward it is going to become more and more important that we take every opportunity to reuse everything that we possibly can. We've all seen the futuristic movies where everything from banana peels to coffee grounds can be used to power flying cars and laser guns. If only we could do that now!

But you do have the time! Recycling is quick and easy. It just requires a little bit of planning and a very small promise to try and do something good for our world and our fellow man. It doesn't take any much more time to recycle a soda can than it does to throw it the trash! Instead of dumping that can in the trash bin, throw it into a paper sack or a special plastic container.

And what about plastic? Well, you'd be shocked what we can do with old milk jugs and plastic soda bottles. How about this for a partial list: chairs and tables, shirts, roadside curbs, benches, stationary, packing peanuts. The list goes on and on. So think again before you toss that Coke bottle in the trash!

"But then I have to take that big stinky bag all the way out to the recycling station. It's too time consuming and it makes my car smell like the floor of a bar!" Not if you take a couple simple steps before hand. First, rinse that can! That solves the problem of the smell.

The fact is, there is an awful lot of plastic out there that just cannot be recycle. Most folks can't tell the difference and the coding that is imprinted on most plastic items often seems like a foreign language to most people.

How easy is that? Super easy. The truth is that recycle is easier than you think. It also has the added bonus of making you feel better about the world and your place in it. You are doing your part. You are helping to make the world a better place not just for yourself, but for your children and your children's children. When you recycle, you are a hero! Sounds a little corny, but it's true.

But in general, plastic should be recycled whenever possible. The fact is that scientists are working on these very problems now. There will come a time when we can recycle all plastic and many of us will have wardrobes filled with "plastic" shirts that feel softer than cotton. As we move forward as a growing society, life will become more and more all about recycling.
