Why Your Tires Need To Be Aligned

How many times in your life have you driven down the road

, let go of the wheel with one hand, and felt the car suddenly pull? This pull could be to the right or to the left. It could be drastic or it may not be noticeable at all. When you are only holding the wheel with one hand for a second, it becomes even more noticeable.

Your vehicle might just be in need of a tire alignment. When the alignment is off, it can produce all kinds of problems with the vehicle you weren't expecting, such as the shift when it is driving down the road. A vehicle should be aligned regularly, in order to prevent excessive and uneven wear on the tires, not to mention to keep you safe as you drive down the road.

Stay Safe

A car that pulls to the right or the left can be unsafe. Do you drive on a four lane highway often, where another lane of vehicles pass you close by? If your alignment is off and you let go of the wheel with one hand for just a second, it could be enough to pull you into that next lane and hit the cars that are driving in it.

An accident could be caused because the tires weren't aligned properly. You could also have a problem with your alignment, and go across the yellow line and into oncoming traffic if your pull goes to the right. No matter which way your vehicle is pulling you, a tire alignment can fix the problem.

The Life of Your Tires

Getting the tires looked at is one of the easier things for a vehicle. The car is put on a lift so that all four tires are visible to the eye. Once the tire pressure is checked, the tires are checked for wear spots or uneven wear. Uneven wear on the tires is one of the first indications that it is out of alignment, especially when one tire has more wear on it than the others. When the front and back tire have more wear on one side of the tire than the other, you can feel the uneven wear.

Once these problems are recognized, then the vehicle is put on a computer that measures the angle of the tires in degrees. When one is way off, that means the tire alignment is off. The computer readout shows the ASE Master Technicians which tires need to be adjusted, and how much they need to be adjusted. The tires are then put into the correct placement and a test drive is taken down the road.

The tires can get knocked out of alignment after traveling a lot of miles without it being checked, especially if you drive down bumpy roads or if you just haven't had the tires rotated recently. The alignment can be knocked off easily, but it can also be fixed quite easily. As long as the alignment is correct without driving too many miles, the wear on the tires won't be effected and they should still have their entire life expectancy.
