Why Your Traditional Martial Art Training Needs To Stop Being A Tradition
There doesn't seem to be a week that goes by without someone contacting asking us what the best style is out there
. Let's put aside that it is relative which style is the best, and that you have to decide what you want to get out of the style before you select one from the many arts out there.
We don't recommend anyone else; because we know what we're teaching is the best and it is the most simplistic we can make for all of you to learn. Still though many of you out there are loyal to your instructor to a fault, and your quick to criticize without even training with the system. There are those of you who wish to continue practicing styles that aren't useful for self defense any longer, but this needs to stop.
Now like many of you I'm a fan of traditional martial arts with all the history, rituals, and the bowing, but you have to ask yourself is it doing you any good beyond getting you into shape? By the way mixed martial arts aren't a style it is a sport where fighters pick their favorite techniques from different styles to use in a controlled combat sport competition.
I'm not taking anything away from the great athletes who compete, but it isn't training you for a real fight where every technique that was banned comes into play. There was a time many traditional styles were brutal, but they're a long way away from the streets and battlefields where they were born.
So unless you're practicing a form of hand to hand combat that can handle every self defense scenario in every environment, and can easily be adapted to include weapons you're wasting your time. Also you shouldn't have to be in the best shape of your life to make the techniques work and they shouldn't take years to master.
If you're going to whine about and how impressive your instructor is I would have to ask what have you learned and what are you capable of doing under such a talented instructor? So, if you can't perform the same techniques as your instructor what good are they really? You have to be able to defend yourself, and you should start learning how to do that on day one.
Perhaps your pretty annoyed right now and you think we're pretty arrogant, but the fact is self defense should be simple and shouldn't take long to learn. Maybe you feel you know it all already and it would just be a waste of your time learn anything more, and to that we say have fun getting your ass kicked. If you do want to learn how to defend yourself effectively than welcome aboard and start a new martial tradition, and once your able to protect yourself you can spend all your time practicing martial arts for fun.
