Why building a website is like having a baby

Having children is arguably one of the hardest things any person will do in life

. It's not just labor and delivery that's tough, it's everything. From nighttime feedings to the struggles with daytime naps to just finding a few minutes for yourself, there's no doubt it's a challenging endeavor.

If you've ever had a hand in building a website for your company, you'll notice there are a lot of similarities:

Conception Just when you get everyone board (no small feat!), something happens that prevents your project from getting started. Maybe another more important deadline gets in the way, perhaps a key person in the project goes on vacation or maybe you're just overwhelmed at what building a website entails so you stall. And, as if the pressure to get the project rolling isn't enough, you've got other excited staff members asking you daily how it's going!

Pregnancy - Everyone has finally agreed on what the goals of the project are and your search engine optimization and website design firm has been hired. You've had several meetings to talk about the specifics, you've begun planning and you've signed off some of the key elements of the project. Now the work begins. Some of it you are responsible for and some of it is handled by your vendor. There's a lot of prepping and planning involved so that you have all the right information available to all the right people.

Labor & Delivery Months have gone by (yes, months Much like babies aren't born overnight, building a website takes time, too) and your website is finally ready to be born. You and your search engine optimization firm have checked and re-checked all your files, content and links to make sure everything is just so. And then, usually on a Friday afternoon, someone uploads the files and. Ta-da! Your website is born!

The first week Oh, the first few days are tiring as you adjust to the changes. Things aren't where they used to be anymore and people are asking questions you never imagined you'd have to answer but it's all going OK. You're getting into a groove. Building a website is fun!

And then there comes a day when your website is all grown up, or at least past the early days of missed broken links and typos. And one day the phone rings and it's a new prospect who found your site on Google and just loves what you have to offer and wants to do business. It's kind of like that first real smile. Priceless. All those long hours you spent building your website were worth it.

Of course, that first smile is just the beginning. There's still a lot of work to do: Link building, new content creation and keeping up with your ever-evolving business. But that'll be worth it too.
