You don't have to shell out for a cinema-sized TV to enjoy the benefits of HDTV either, with even a standard set being ideal for bringing the cinematic experience home. However, there are a number of considerations you'll need to make when shopping for your new TV set to make sure you get the best deal and the best device for you.

If you're planning on subscribing or upgrading to HD packages from your digital provider, you should look for TVs that are HD-ready, meaning they can still display standard definition broadcasts but are also capable of accessing HD-only channels. If you plan on getting the most from your new high definition set by watching DVDs or Blu Ray discs, you may also wish to look for TVs that feature options specifically for this type of viewing, such as CineMotion or film modes.

You pay for quality with HD, but if you still feel these sets are out of your budget, even after shopping around, you might wish to consider Enhanced Definition (ED) as a stop-gap measure. The quality of these sets is superior to Standard Definition (SD), but you should be aware that you may not be able to access HD channels, and that the continuing evolution of TV may soon mean you're left behind as HD becomes the new standard.
