Why do you need to know English in India
English is still very popular in former British colonies, for example, in such countries of South-East Asia, as India and Pakistan.
Let's take a glance into history. India had always been a tasty morsel for Europe as merchants brought out various strange things fabrics, spices; travelers told incredible stories about its wonders. Trade with India brought huge profits even in spite of imperfections of sailing ships of those days which resulted in a dramatic number of shipwrecks and various complications accompanying voyages around the African continent. In search of a faster route to India the Spaniards even discovered America. Naturally, the great maritime powers longed to make India their colony. Britain was particularly successful in achieving this goal. British Ost-Indian Company founded in the early XVII-th century took charge of the majority of commercial, diplomatic, military and political operations in India. Under those circumstances it chose the most successful way of penetration to India and strengthening its positions there. At those times the English language became the language of ruling classes and naturally those who wanted to break through' had to know English.
The domination of Britain lasted long enough for several generations to treat the English language almost as their second mother tongue.
Nowadays there are two state languages in India Hindi and English. In Pakistan English is second official language used for documenting. It is next to impossible to get higher education if you don't know English. The example provided below illustrates the popularity of the English language in India.
It is well-known that the Indian society is a caste one. Although all the castes are equal in front of law in fact it is far from being so, as centuries-old stereotypes and customs are still in force. The situation is particularly tough for members of the caste of "untouchable" because of the ban to communicate with members of other castes. This caste consists of people who do the dirtiest work slaughter animals and process their skins. Such restriction may be justified by the hot climate of India as it stops infections from spreading, however these requirements are too strict and "untouchables" suffer from such inequality.
Members of the caste of untouchable', or Dalits as they are called, started to build the temple of the English language. The construction process started in April 2010 in a village in the state of Uttar-Pradish. By this time a 76-centimeter statue of the Goddess ordered in Delhi had been brought. The walls of the temple will be covered with quotations of English authors and decorated with the icon of Thomas MacCauley the American who once promoted the overall learning of English by the Indians.
Leaders of the Untouchable hope that the construction of this temple will impel children of the lower castes to study the English language. They are of the opinion that education is the only way for low strata to change their miserable existence to decent living. It must be admitted that they are perfectly right as lack of the knowledge of English prevents people from getting good education and, consequently, from getting a good job. It must be incredibly hard to get decent education as these people worship the English language as a real God!
Here in Kharkiv there many opportunities to study the English language - one of them is provided by our School of Foreign Languages. If you study with us you will be able to read the inscriptions on the walls of the Temple and light a candle there.
