With hydroponics, plants are cultivated with a growing medium and a well-balance pH adjusted nutrient solution which are provided to the plant roots. This makes it possible for the plants to take in their food supply with as little effort as possible, unlike a situation when soil is used and the plants have to extract the nutrients from it.

Hydroponic fertilizers are a mixture of three major nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These fertilizers are made in a refined form, and contain fewer impurities, which makes them stable and easily soluble for absorption by the plant roots.
The micro-nutrients that are used in hydroponics are calcium, magnesium, sulfur, boron, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc. It is essential in hydroponics that these nutrients are adequately contained in the fertilizer, so that the plants will grow well!
Hydroponics can be incredibly simple, since you can use a simple hand watered bucket or a nursery pot, and any number of inert growing mediums. Of course, the potential to be technical is limited only by your imagination and budget. Almost every aspect of garden management can be automated and if you desire, monitored and controlled with your laptop or cell phone!
Most hobby oriented hydroponic systems fall somewhere between the two extremes mentioned. The average, home hydroponic system generally consists of a few basic parts, including a growing tray, a reservoir, a submersible pump to moisten the plants, a simple timer and an air pump and air stone to aerate the nutrient solution. Of course, light (either natural or artificial) is also needed.
The control of pH in hydroponics is absolutely essential because plants lose the ability to absorb different nutrients when the pH varies. The ability to quickly and easily test and control pH in hydroponics is a major advantage.
