Why does my artwork blue print purple on full color prints
?
This can be frustrating to buyers of full color printing as well as us printers who are looking for a print just short of perfect.
Every once in awhile, a client will call and ask if we know how print the correct blue and not "purple-ish" blues. We simply tell the client, "Yes, we do have experience printing the correct blue"; however, this can be a task if the client sends us only a high resolution jpeg file and the client does not know there CMYK values of their blue. If the client is close by, you will have to show them some type of Pantone Formula Guides to choose the correct blue. There could be liabilities problems as to who printed the blue incorrectly - liabilities to the intent of refunds, of course. In my experience, it is best to let the client do the choosing of which color best suites their best interest.
To the Point: The reason that your Blues come in purple after the work is printed from a full color printing company is because blue is close to purple in the CMYK spectrum. There is a "Rule of Thumb" formula that is used by most experienced printers. Printing Blue correctly all starts with design work. When using a blue in your design, always make sure to leave at least a 30% difference in your Cyan and Magenta values. Use a lower amount of magenta whenever using high amounts of cyan to avoid purple.
Example: C-100 M-70 Y-0 k-0
