"Kiki's" close family and the residents of his home town, Calexico, California, all wore red ribbons in his honor and hence the Red Ribbon Week was formed. The first Red Ribbon Week was proclaimed in 1988 with Nancy Reagan playing a very active role in organizing and promoting the event.
