Why is Kelly Hoppin?
I read an article recently in a Sunday supplement where the British interior design guru, Kelly Hoppen is selling her Notting Hill home, apparently she wants something larger with a pool, a games room and a bigger dressing room. As we are involved in the design and retail of high quality eclectic furniture occasional chairs, headboards, pews, chaises longue that sort of thing, I stuffed the magazine behind the sofa to read at my leisure.
When I went to retrieve the magazine it had gone a casualty of the new evangelism turning our nearest and dearest into recycling crusaders. So I did what I have never done before, I went online to the newspaper web site to read the article. However, just as in the furniture business, things have moved on and I discovered that, for a small sum, I could view both the article and have a 360 video tour of Hoppen's home which was even better, especially as I don't think a dinner party invitation is going to drop on my doormat anytime soon!
As I took in the master bedroom with its' handmade designer bed - all white except for a dash of green I was delighted to note that the over-sized bedhead would not have been outside our remit to make. However moving down to the lounge there is a 1970s Italian coffee table in black glass a rare find indeed - which we could definitely not! I think we could come up with something similar to the easy chairs though and also the enormous bed-pouffe. For the kitchen, with its white leather dining chairs yes, we could make them - but the eye level fireplace is something else!
I could go on but what really made me sit up and take notice is that Hoppen said she wanted to do another look, something different from her trademark neutral palette, "something more eclectic a Baroque minimalism". This is very exciting news for the furniture industry and sets us a challenge. The chaises longue should pose no problem but chairs, tubs, sofas and bedheads with a watered down hint of Versailles? Can we rise to the challenge? Yes, I think we can. Now, should I fly or take the Eurostar to Paris to carry out some research......
