Mulching around the trees will reduce temperature extremes and retain moisture levels for longer durations between watering. It is important to keep mulch away from the trunks of the trees. Limit pruning of trees to winter months when beetles are not active,. November and December are good months to prune pine trees. Pruning during the summer months attracts bark beetles to the pruning cuts. It is also important to monitor your trees for beetle activity. Check the lower trunks during spring and summer for any frass material. Frass is small sawdust type material formed when the beetles chew into the tree. Another preventative measure is spraying the trees with a prophylactic application of insecticide.

Another cause of browning in pine trees is pitch canker. Pitch canker causes die back at the tips of branches, and allow sap to flow from the cankers. There is no current treatment other than keeping trees as healthy as possible to reduce stress. Mycorrhizae treatment is a quick and cost effective solution to improving tree health. Mycorrhizae is a beneficial root fungus that attaches to tree roots and increases the surface area for nutrient and water reception. Trees can be sprayed in the Spring before beetles become active.
