Why is there an Increase in the Number of Hackers on the Internet?

Why is there an Increase in the Number of Hackers on the Internet

?

There are a number of trends and influences that have allowed the number of hackers to literally explode in the last 12 Months. This influence, in combination means that all business that is attached to the internet is in for a torrid time.

Three factors have contributed to this explosion:

Distributed computing - the use of a number of small end and cheap computers in combination to create a variation of a "Super Computer" allows an increase in computing power that was not available previously.

Mobile Computing - Laptops, tablets, smart phones, cameras and MP3 players have made working from home or on the road relatively easy. This has allowed the network perimeter to become leaky in a number of ways. There are now many more access points to a network than there were previously and this allows more attack vectors to your business.

The Internet - The proliferation of business using the internet for business and the convergence of technologies like VOIP and wireless will further increase the leaks of business data.

The internet provides an effective, immediate and powerful business multiplier if used correctly and increases communication capability on almost all parts of a business. This exposes an organisation to security risks that were previously never thought of.

So why is there an increase in the number of hackers on the internet?

Hacker tools are becoming commonplace and some even have legitimate use for an organisation. These tools are constantly updated and upgraded and are available from a myriad of websites that proliferate on the internet.

The combination of Hackers, Virus writers and spam operators find better and more direct ways of accessing your network. This increase also includes Phishing and other fraud related processes that will continue to evolve. This is leading to better-blended threats on the internet that can only be restricted and stopped with better technology and more expensive defensive implementations.

Increases in perimeter defences, including Authorisation and authentication will create a bigger need for social engineering.

The increase in computer literacy allows for the newest generation of users to be more familiar with computers and this will drive the next revolution of threats. Instant messaging (IM) is now used by generation Y more that they use e-mail but IM is inherently less secure. We will see alternative technology evolving in the near future.

The implementation of wireless technology or even Bluetooth makes accessing the internet easier and cheaper from cafes, shopping malls or practically anywhere. This increases the perceived value of Wi-Fi without countering the increased risks to the organisation. This can expose confidential and sensitive information to external access.

The reduced cost for a computer allows low income people to have access to the internet and computers. This means that most people now have enough knowledge to pose a threat to an organisation.

So what does that mean to a business organisation?

No organisation or business is immune.

Every organisation will experience some level exposure or attack.

Disruptions to business processes will happen and most organisations will experience downtime through internal or external problems. The recovery process will depend on planning and perceived cost.

Organisation will have an increased risk of individual privacy concerns. This then brings into play the increased reliance on legislation and compliance.

Staff members and business may experience direct financial loss. Protection of personal information and credit and payment details is essential. Furthermore losses of intellectual property, products and contracts can cause long term financial damage to a business.

Reputations can be badly damaged. Businesses that are unable or unwilling to protect their clients information to the best of their ability can be exposed to penalties, fines and all out legal problems.

The numbers are convincing and the threats are apparent. No one can afford to ignore the need for business information security. The problem associated with the threats being wide spread and the problems associated with a breach can no longer be covered with a simple email policy or a business continuity plan.

Today's business needs a framework that will allow the business to react to problems but be resilient enough to cope with all situations. This framework would allow a business to implement protection for the data that is vital to the business without exposing the business to outside influences.
