Why should we have knowledge: to survive or to satisfy an inner impulse?

Ever since the existence of the stone age man we inquire into things, into our existence, our universe and our position in the universe. Every individual, whether he likes it or not is motivated to get to know things.

Whether you are a worker in a factory you have to know what you are doing, or you are a merchant you have to know about how to trade, or a farmer you have to know about the earth and plants, or you are a medical personnel you have to know about medicine.

If you are a scientist you have all the tools of science helping you examining nature and its products. The list is endless. What DNA knowledge informs us is how to restore good health to ill people and perhaps how to cloon a sheep of a human being.

What astrophysics tells us is how the universe is constructed and how did it come about. What social sciences tell us is how psychiatry can deal with psychosomatic symptoms.

Although there is a big difference between exact and applied sciences on the one hand and social sciences on the other in terms of experiment and evidence as well as application experimental sciences makes the difference between the two. But what we are all after is knowledge. We want to know how our world is made, why is it made.

We want to know what are we doing on earth, or what on earth are we doing? We want to know who are we? And we did we come from and where are we going? From the sensible to the intelligible is our journey of curiosity.

But is this in order to make us survive or better survive? Or is it to enable us to know for knowing?

Differences between the two are evident bu both objectives meet at more than one point. We have to survive, in our imposed journey. We cannot escape to be born, to grow, to live until maturity and adulthood, for the most of us, then to undergo death, at which we perish and our atoms disintegrate.

Whether our atoms, that make our real our presence in our obligatory form and shape, structure and reactions, are created and then put together and held together by a super power or not, depends totally on our own personal convictions.

In short we look into the universe and our selves where the interaction is inevitable and inescapable and then we are faced with the question of a creator-cause: God, it is entirely up to us to believe in this cause-creator or not.

This is the case since there is no one proof for God's existence. It is left to us to decide on this question. Perhaps the most important and fundamental question that ever a human being is faced with.

We are obliged to face this question and are obliged to choose between belief and disbelief. We have a life-time, a mind and the freedom of choice and will to choose, and have to make the choice. Nobody leaves this world without making his, or her, choice before death.

Knowledge, in this way has a definite directionality and finality that is precise and inescapable namely to survive and to enable us to make a choice between belief and disbelief in a creator-cause. Do you know anyone who did not make this choice? Or is in the making of such a choice?
