Council offers a wealth of opportunity both in the diversity and levels of jobs available. There are a huge number of different sectors within councils from education to fire and rescue and social care. This means that there is a huge variety of positions available for those with specific qualifications.

Council jobs are not only beneficial to the council as a whole, but they benefit the entire local community and everyone associated with the area. You could even go as far to say, by working for your council, you are benefitting the future as well, due to many jobs involving the younger community. This means that council jobs tend to be more rewarding.

With such an extensive range of opportunities, it is important to think about two things when searching for the right job. You need to consider both what you want to do and what you can do. You should start by considering any qualifications you have. These may not be necessary for all type of local authority jobs but are useful to bear in mind as they may be the gateway to a higher earning position.

If you do not currently have many qualifications, working for a council will benefit you by giving you access to training opportunities you may not have considered nor had access to before. Not only will they help you to progress in your career, but will also assist you in your current job to complete the work.

Public sector jobs also tend to have more flexible hours than most 9-5 office jobs. This is dependent on the nature of the work, for example a teacher may have significantly different hours to an accounts administrator. This does however mean that options such as flexi time and job shares may be available. The holiday time available with the council will differ depending on your job role however the minimum offered is usually a healthy three weeks paid leave. Obviously this can increase the longer you are with the council.
