Why you're never too old to learn to roller skate

Roller skating and rollerblading are often associated with teenagers and the very young

. There are however many people who have taken up roller skating in their 40s, 50s, and even in their 60s and beyond, and found it to be an inexpensive but fun way of keeping fit.

So how should the older individual go about taking up roller skating?

The first priority for older skaters is always to wear full protective gear in case of falls; for older individuals, an unprotected fall can sometimes have more serious consequences than it would a younger skater. It is therefore all the more imperative that knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards are all worn in addition to a helmet.

Unexpected falls can of course be minimised with training and practice.

Training should always be undertaken with a qualified instructor, both to speed the learning process as much as possible, and also to help the rider avoid poor skating techniques early on. Practice, meanwhile, should be carried out in a safe environment such as a flat open area away from traffic, or at an official local authority skate park.

Many older people who are not used to skating have also found that their efforts can be greatly helped by starting off with the more stable quad roller skates (in other words those skates with two horizontal rows of wheels) rather than the comparatively less stable inline skates.

In addition, for those who are particularly prone to losing their balance when skating, extra stability-enhancing exercises can be undertaken. Many find that even basic exercises such as standing on one leg, can have an immediate beneficial advantage.

At Skates.co.uk we offer a wide range of great value, quality skates suitable for the older beginner, and are happy to advise on all aspects of skating for both beginner and experienced rider alike.
