The leaderboard at the Wegmans LPGA is packed with talent this year

, including Cristie Kerr, and Ai Miyazato, who celebrated her 23rd birthday in style with a score of 68, 4 under par. Indeed Miyazato is one of the rising stars of sport in Japan, although she is yet to win despite taking part in 56 LPGA competitions.

Lorena Ochoa, who won the tournament last year and is currently ranked number one in women's golf, scored even-par during windy conditions with rain holding off until the evening. Her score was one better than that of Annika Sorenstam, who is set become an ambassador for the PGA next season. Ochoa had previously had victory in the same competition, held at Rochester in New York, in 2005 and 2007. To date she has grossed $1.9m which is $500,000 ahead of Sorenstam, who has only ever come second there in 1996.

Kerr claims to have been troubled by the neck injury she has been suffering from for several years during this round. Last year, she was also suffering with a head-cold but still managed to take the first round.

Miyazato was a 14 time champion in the JLPGA and has had thirteen finishes in the top ten over the last 24 months, including runner up in the HSCB Women's Match Play championship last summer. This year, her best performance to date has been tying for 14th place at the SemGroup Championship, saying afterwards that she felt she was maintaining a good form.
