Wigan - Greater Manchester A Gem In The Northwest Of England

Wigan - Greater Manchester is a lovely town in the north west of England home to just over 80

,000 residents who are lucky enough to be able to experience its charm and delightful surroundings. There are many landmarks here that those in and around the north west can identify with. One of the main places to be seen in the 70's was the Wigan Casino, not a casino itself but an exciting dance venue for those with a passion for Northern Soul music. Unfortunately the building burned down and it was decided not to replace it with a dance venue but with the towns biggest shopping mall.

There is also the beautiful area known as Wigan Pier, part of the pier itself is still there, a small jettison where coal was loaded in days gone by. There is a canal running through as well as a museum of local history where school trips often take place so children can sit in the real Victorian classroom complete with strict school mistress to see what a lesson was like in Victorian times!

The Pier also hosts a popular nightspot where local young people go to dance to bouncy house based dance music until late at night. The Pier area is very accessible as it is very close to the town centre and is an area that's loved by residents and visitors alike, whether they want to look at the sites and the old buildings or go for a meal or party the night away.

The city is also well known for its links with the game of rugby, the local team are now called the Wigan Warriors and they were the first ever world club champions in 1987 setting a precedent in the sport for the area. Their soccer team have been a premier league team for the last 5 years as well as reaching their first cup final in 2006 showing just how successful they can be.

Ever hear someone from the city getting called a pie eater? There is a reason behind this other than pies being popular in the north west. It comes down to them eating humble pie when they were the first town to break the general workers strike that was nationwide in the UK in 1926. The reason this happened was because of the awful poverty they lived in at the time, they simply couldn't afford not to work.

Situated a mile and a half outside of the town centre is the original Heinz factory which has the distinction of being the biggest food production factory in the Europe. There is also the giant sportswear company JJB Sports which was founded by Wiganer John Jarvis Broughton and was later taken over by David Whelan who is also the Chairman of Wigans soccer and rugby teams.

Overall the city is a lovely place if you just want to go shopping, take in the sights, watch soccer or rugby or learn about the history of the area. The beauty of the city is that there is a mixture of old and new buildings, even though it is modern in the respect of the facilities it has all you have to do is look up to see the stunning last 18th Century architecture.
