This is because customers can be hesitant to do transactions over a non secure site. A wildcard SSL Certificate will avoid you the problem of buying separate SSL certificates for all of the sub domains.

As wildcard SSL certificates secure many sub domains, many of the providers misuse them and cheat customers by selling cheap or free fake SSL certificates. They buy Wildcard SSL certificates for their domains. When customers need SSL certificates, they create sub domains under their own domain names. These are meaningless and provide no security at all. They dont even authenticate the customer's identity and are owned by the service provider.
