There are about 320 different species of avifauna (birds) in this sanctuary. Major birds found in the park are darters, kingfishers, cormorants, great Malabar hornbills, rocket-tailed drongos, otters, fish owls, eagles, egrets, gray herons, white egrets, orioles, gray hornbills, etc. About 45 different kinds of reptiles are found in this park. There are 30 species of snakes, two species of turtle and 13 species of lizards found in the park. Travelers can see monitor lizards basking in the sun on the rocks along the shore of Periyar Lake that runs though the park. Pythons, King Cobra, etc are also found. There is the beautiful Periyar Lake that runs through the middle of park. The boat cruise over the lake is the best way to explore the jungle attractions.
