Will Conferencing Outlast Social Media?
Will Conferencing Outlast Social Media?
Will Conferencing Outlast Social Media?
Bold claim? Maybe. After all, social media is all the rage and has been for a good couple of years now, at least.
Social media analysts are keen to share the numbers - Facebook has more than 550 million users, Twitter over 200 million. YouTube sees more than 2 billion views every single day. And these are just the three most people will know about.
So, social media is a pretty big thing, right? It's not going anywhere, so how could anyone say that conferencing will outlast it?
Simple - real numbers and the ability to adapt.
Numbers Aren't Everything
Okay. So Facebook has 550 million users. Twitter, a bit more than a third of that. And other sites - LinkedIn, YouTube, etc - have their own impressive numbers.
But numbers aren't always everything.
Ask how many of these users are still active, versus ones that signed up, used the platform for a little bit, then disappeared, never to use it again. Or how many want to leave, but find Facebook in particular difficult when it comes to deleting an account.
So yes, the numbers are great, but they don't tell the full story.
Compare that to any conference, and you know that the numbers are exactly what they say they are. It doesn't matter of it's ten or 10,000, what you see is what you get. And you know these numbers are all engaged users as well.
Very useful if you're looking to provide ROI and metric reports back to the finance or marketing department.
Adaptability is Everything
Ask any great business what one of the biggest factors is in ongoing success, and the ability to adapt will come back fairly often.
Adapting to the market; adapting to trends, present and future; adapting to customer needs; adapting to cultural needs, and more.
Having the ability to adapt with what's around you is crucial for any business.
While social media platforms and tools have the ability to adapt, they're limited in how much flexibility they have.
For example, if Twitter crashed tomorrow, what would happen to the likes of third-party Twitter providers like Tweetgrid, Tweetdeck, Tweetmeme, etc? What would their services be any good for?
Conferencing, on the other hand, has always been at the forefront of any adapting required. From the early days of just audio conferencing, to web conferencing and video conferencing; conferencing via smart phones or Internet.
Having that adaptability no matter what the technology might be is a huge advantage, and one that businesses of all sizes can appreciate.
Don't get me wrong - I'm a huge social media fan and use it as part of our strategy. But I'm also realistic enough to know that the tools around today won't be around forever, because of how fast social media changes.
Which is why conferencing and its scaled adaptability offer a stronger platform every time.
