For one reason or another, there is often a time when a website comes to the decision that they are going to have to switch to a new web server

. When this happens, the first question that many have is whether or not this type of action is going to have an adverse effect on their search engine rankings. If you've got an internet marketing blog which you've finally got ranking on the first page for your chosen keywords, you don't want that to disappear because you've needed to switch servers. Here are some things to think about regarding server changes and SEO rankings.

The good news is, there are lots of ways that you should be able to switch web servers without having a problem with your SEO rankings. There are few ways that you can help minimize the risk of losing any of your rankings when you make the switch though.

One thing that you're going to need to make sure of is that you have very little downtime on your site. This is assuming by the way, that all other elements of your site, domain name etc., are staying the same. The shorter the downtime you have, the lower the chance of your site losing any rankings. If you're quick about the switch, even if the spiders hit the site once and notice that its missing, by the time they hit it again you should be back up and running, experiencing no loss to your overall rankings.

If you can, another good strategy to use is to keep the files from your website up on the original server a little while after you move to the new one. Now, this isn't always going to be possible, and in some cases it will be impractical, but if you can leave them up for a few days, a month at most, it can help to mitigate any damage you might otherwise see in the rankings.

Generally speaking, you shouldn't lose a load of rankings just by switching to a new web server. The key is to make only one change at a time. Don't try to switch servers and URLS in a single shot, or the resulting traffic loss might be too much to handle. People switch servers all the time though, and most report very little loss in rankings as long as the switch isn't accompanied by a great deal of site down time.
