Many denture wearers experiencing symptoms of a neurological disorder want to know whether switching to a denture cream without zinc will improve their health. If you are currently suffering from zinc poisoning, stopping the use of a denture cream containing zinc and seeking medical treatment will allow your zinc blood levels to eventually return to normal. There is no guarantee, however, that the side effects of zinc poisoning won't last forever.
Zinc has been added to denture creams such as Fixodent (made by Procter & Gamble) and Poligrip (manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline) since the 1990s to aid in adhesion. Although zinc is a necessary mineral in small doses, too much of it can cause a copper deficiency which may eventually result in neurological damage. But because GSK and P&G did not list zinc as an ingredient or provide instructions for safe use, many heavy denture cream users (who may have used large amounts of Fixodent or Poligrip due to ill-fitting dentures), consumed huge amounts of zinc, which led them to develop neuropathy, a condition that can ultimately result in paralysis and even death.
Until 2008, however, when a University of Texas study discovered a link between denture cream zinc and nerve damage, the source of many patients' neurological damage remained a mystery. And now that denture cream been found to be a potential cause of neuropathy, injured denture cream users are filing Fixodent and Poligrip lawsuit against P&G and GSK seeking compensation for their medical bills and other losses.
Recovering money through a lawsuit may help an individual with zinc poisoning move on with his or her life, but it is not a nostrum for the harm caused by toxic denture cream. The good news is that high zinc levels and correspondingly low copper levels can be restored to normal with time and treatment. The bad news is that symptoms of neurologic disease may continue despite this.
The authors of a case study entitled, "When metals compete: a case of copper-deficiency myeloneuropathy and anemia," acknowledged this in the "treatment and management" section of their report. The authors write, "Hematological abnormalities related to copper deficiency myeloneuropathy always resolve with copper supplementation. Neurological signs generally stabilize but do not improve, although some symptoms might show subjective sensory improvement."
The best advice for somebody who believes they are suffering from nerve damage caused by denture cream zinc is to visit a doctor right away for diagnosis and treatment. If you haven't already stopped using a denture cream containing zinc, do so right away. GSK now produces Poligrip without zinc, and other zinc-free products are also available, including:
Secure Denture Bonding Cream
Secure Denture Adhesive Cushion Strips
Sea-Bond Denture Adhesive Wafers
Effergrip
